These are images from the Misawa Port just days after the Tsunami struck... I don't have much to say... they are too sad... some clean up had already started (like plowing the foot of sand that covered all the roads) but when I got there, no one was around... it was really creepy and really really tragic... this place was utterly destroyed.
I thought this was powerful... coca-cola... something we all can relate to
Some how a light bulb managed to survive...
This slab of concrete was massive... just thrown around like nothing
a buoy... maybe from out in the ocean, maybe from in the port
A road used to go across here connecting the swimming beach to the port
This huge boat is hundreds of feet from the water

Hi, My daughter stayed with a family who lived across the street from the beach at the Misawa Port. Do you know anything about the houses in the area or whether everyone got out? Thanks, Susan
The water did not reach the main road before you turn to go to the port, the ground is fairly high there... from what I saw first hand there were some houses in low lying areas north of the port and a couple portions of road that were effected but not very many... we are lucky the ground slopes up fairly quickly in our area. Here is what Col Al Wimmer said after the quake "We have not suffered any serious injuries or any loss of life to Misawa Air Base or even to the local area that we are aware of- much unlike others." I hope that helps..
Thank you so much. My daughter has been terribly worried and we didn't know how to find out about the people since all the info seemed to be about the base and the city.
It turns out they have their house at Sabishiro Beach. My daughter is still worried. Do you know anything about Sabishiro Beach? She was happy to hear that you hadn't heard of any deaths or serious injuries around there. Thanks again, Susan
Sabishiro beach is actually the beach I call Miss Veedol beach (cause its where they took off from).. I have a whole post about this beach post tsunami... again the beach is mostly destroyed... the tower is standing... the replica of Miss Veedol is washed away, but the water did not reach the main road in this area... the ground slopes up fairly steeply and there is a dense forest between the ocean here and any houses... so I bet they are fine
Thank you so much. My daughter will be very relieved to here this. We are thinking of you all,all the time. My daughters and I came over about 4 1/2 years ago with a sister city delegation and stayed with different families. Every year a group of teenagers come over here to visit Wenatchee, where the Miss Veedol landed, and we entertain them at the school where I teach. That's our connection. Thanks again. Susan
